Our Story
|
InterVarsity began in 1877 when Christian students from Oxford and Cambridge Universities experienced inspiration from the Holy Spirit to help their generation seek God. They banded together to form a combined group between their schools (hence the name "InterVarsity"). This student-led movement made its way across the UK, then to Canada, and eventually down to the United States.
The first U.S.-based InterVarsity group was established in 1938 at the Unifversity of Michigan. Since then, InterVarsity has spread across the country, led by students, volunteers, and eventually paid staff, all of whom have a passion and vision to see lives transformed by the Gospel, the campus renewed, and world-changers developed. As the ministry developed as an organization, distinct focus areas emerged, including a Graduate students and Faculty Ministry (known as "GFM"), with its roots predominantly here in Boston! The InterVarsity graduate and faculty fellowships across Greater Boston are part of a longstanding legacy of discipleship, spiritual formation, integration of faith and work, and Kingdom-minded witness that spans over 50 years. We've been honored to be part of the journeys of dozens of renowned, world-impacting scholars and leaders, but also the innumerable many who serve, teach, research, and lead without earthly recognition. For all graduate students in Boston, whether you're a longtime follower of Jesus, someone considering faith again, or you're just beginning to explore spirituality, we invite you to join an InterVarsity fellowship - where God can form, shape, heal, and equip you for whatever comes! We hope to see you soon! |
